VirtueMart Import Categories

When you administer big VirtueMart database, any manipulations you need to make should be implemented quickly and effectively. Usually a series of new data to be dropped in or updated, but manual human efforts are usually not enough. The more data are piled, the more difficult it becomes to find and manage them. Thus, placing goods to desired VirtueMart categories via import directly or simultaneously building properly-organized category tree is reasonable solution.

Store Manager for VirtueMart empowers you with this useful possibility. At the moment it is possible to perform VirtueMart import categories procedure only in combination with products, though, further releases of the software will have included feature to upload categories separately from goods.

First of all, you have to prepare file for import. There you have to make sure that for each product the category is indicated. In case you multilayered category tree with main categories and subcategories, you need to have category path in the feed with information.

Category path is the string that contains the categories and subcategories in the sequence of their consequence. It starts from top-level categories and ends with sub-category where the product should be placed. The categories and subcategories are divided by separator. For example, if you have top-level category ‘Computers’, subcategory ‘Laptops’ and in this sub-category you have category ‘Apple’, on condition that you want the product will be placed to ‘Apple’ lower level category, the correct category path will be - Computers|Laptops|Apple, where pipe symbol (|) serves as separator.

Often there emerges the need for the item to be placed to multiple VirtueMart categories. For that indicate necessary category paths, separating them by double delimiter. Following our example, imagine that you need the product to be placed to ‘Apple’ 3d-level category and ‘Laptops’ 2nd-level category, put in the file the following string:

Computers|Laptops|Apple||Computers|Laptops

One more benefit of VirtueMart import categories and products is that even in case the category you have indicated was not present at your store yet, it will be added in the fly right during upload.

When the file with categories and products assigned to them is ready for import, there are only a few steps that should be followed to accomplish the process. The most important are the following:

  1. Select the file you prepared for VirtueMart import categories procedure. Store Manager for VirtueMart handles files of .CSV, .XML, .XLS, .ODS and .TXT format.
  2. Indicate delimiters used in your file for the data to be parsed properly and arranged in correct way.
  3. Set additional import options, like upload method, identification method, images upload etc.
  4. For each VirtueMart database field, enter appropriate .csv column, choosing the one from drop-down (where all columns are indicated). To correctly upload categories, do not forget to link the field “Category” to the row in your file where you have category path indicated.
