VirtueMart Parent and Child Products

Keeping VirtueMart catalog manageable and customizable is an essential requirement for internet merchants. To cope with this task, store owners won’t spare without creating different variations on same VirtueMart products. This is being realized by adding certain VirtueMart custom fields (attributes) to products sold online and, in such a way, providing customers with various options.

To clarify the situation, we will look into the example. You commence on selling sweaters in 4 colours - pink, white, red, blue and 3 sizes - S, M, L. In fact, this is one product with different characteristics and instead of creating separate product for each variant, you may create one product that will home all the options accessible.

VirtueMart parent products and child products will come to the assistance. The notion of parent and child VirtueMart products indicates property dependencies between two products. Actually, child product has the characteristics of parent VirtueMart product, although can have its own characteristics. Child product is a pre-defined variation of the main product.

With Store Manager for VirtueMart you may easily handle parent and child products and create different variations of the same item at an easy rate. It allows you to easily arrange product attributes and attribute values and create customizable VirtueMart products.

Whenever you need to add, let’s say, sweaters in colours and sizes mentioned above, you need first of all create corresponding custom fields and values via Custom Fields section of Store Manager application. Step by step guidance on how to do it you may find in this article - http://virtuemart-manager.com/useful-articles/product-management/attributes-groups/

Having added custom fields (size, colour) and necessary values (pink, white, red, blue; S, M, L), create parent product and specify its details in the Edit Product form in the lower grid. Note, to make this product parent you need to assign “Generic child variant” attribute type to it.

Parent product being created, associate VirtueMart child products to it. Focus parent VirtueMart product and press “Add child product” button on products toolbar or in the context menu. You will derive new product under parent product in the main grid. Specify its details in the Edit Product form tabs in the lower grid. Since current item (product variant) has its specific set of attributes, assign them in Custom Fields tab. Select required attribute from the dropdown (size, colour) and specify values for them. To complete the procedure press “Apply” button below. Add necessary child items in similar way, designating necessary attribute values to them.

Creating VirtueMart parent products and child items is very convenient, since you can track their inventory and set different prices for each of child items. At the front-end one product page will incorporate all product variants accessible. Your customers can customizable the purchase and select the item that best suits their need.
